Soda Concoctions
The other day Sunshine and I went to the grocery store and she asked for some orange soda. I used to love orange soda but I haven’t drank it in years I bought it anyway. This wasn’t Sunkist but the store brand which in my opinion is just as good as name brand stuff. I drank a cup and I found myself thinking about Christmas 16 or so years ago.
At this time, I was into Barbie’s and many times for Christmas I would get a lot of Barbie stuff. This particular Christmas I was given a Barbie Soda Fountain thing. I don’t remember too much about it other than it was pink and plastic. It came with pink fountain cups that also doubled as stools for Barbie. It also had this hopper thing that you could add any beverage and use the spout to pour it into the glasses. While my sisters were over after Christmas we had this brilliant idea of making new soda.
My parents used to buy cases of Atreat (for those who don’t know this is generic soda you can buy at a distributor where you can mix and match the flavors you want it was cheap and delicious) Anyway they bought some for Christmas since we had a lot of people over. We took different flavors of Atreat, root beer, cream soda, lemon line, punch you name we had it. We started combining two flavors in the hopper and we would dare each other to drink it. Some of the stuff wasn’t bad and some of our potions were just plain horrid. One concoction which was rather good was orange and lemon-lime root beer wasn’t a very good mixer and really I don’t think root beer is a good mixer to this day.
I probably think about this until I had orange soda the other day, it goes to show how much taste buds and memory are intertwined and why some writers talk about food in their stories because many people can draw off their memory of food for a feeling.
